Fruit sake such as umeshu, yuzu-shu, jabara, momo, mikan and ringo “sake” are delicious Japanese drinks made by adding fruit to a sake base.

Strictly speaking, both terms are off: once you add anything beyond rice, water, yeast and koji, it’s not sake. And with ABV usually under 15% and often no added sugar, “liqueur” isn’t quite right either. We still use these names because they’re widely understood.

Joyo Umeshu is a beautiful Umeshu (also falsely called plum wine) from Kyoto. This Umenoyado Aragoshi Ringo is made with the same processes as the famous Umeshu produced by Umenoyado. However, this variant has replaced the Ume with Japanese Fuji apples, giving it a sweeter and more nectar-like aroma. The rich taste and soft textures make it ideal to enjoy with ice or as a cocktail.
