Japanese gins tend to emphasise unique local botanicals (such as shiso and yuzu) alongside the classic ingredients. The Japanese influence on the traditional gin formula is clear, often especially in the first batches. Can we say a distinct category of “Japanese gin” has emerged? Absolutely. Current gin distillations are still largely inspired by international processes that have been used for many years. But who knows—before long we might be talking about Japanese gin entirely on its own terms.
